On the show, Donahue introduced Philip Lanzaratta, who’d been diagnosed with Kaposi’s Sarcoma (a cancer associated with AIDS), Larry Kramer, screenwriter and Gay Men’s Health Crisis co-founder, and Dr. Dan William, who worked with patients with HIV/AIDS.
The broadcast featured a candid conversation discussing the rise in cases, symptoms of the disease, education of the medical community, discrimination against the gay community, treatment for patients with AIDS, and more.

Renowned “King of Daytime Talk”Phil Donahue, who created and hosted theThe Phil Donahue Show,died on Sunday, Aug. 18 at the age of 88, PEOPLE can confirm.
The statement noted he “passed away peacefully following a long illness.”
Donahue’s family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made toSt. Jude Children’s Research Hospitalor the Phil Donahue/Notre Dame Scholarship Fund.

Phil Lesh, who was the bassist and a founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died. He was 84.
Lesh’s death was announced onInstagramon Friday, Oct. 25, with a statement saying he “passed peacefully this morning.” No cause of death was given.
The same day, Lesh’s Grateful Dead bandmates Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Bob Weir released a statement honoring their longtime friend.
