Martha, meanwhile, would call around Medellín to ask if Karol could perform at birthday parties or school events.

When Karol began her career, her father was instrumental in advocating for her contracts and gigs.

As a teenager in 2007, Karol auditioned for the Colombian version ofThe X Factorbut didn’t secure a spot on the show. Quickly, though, she signed a recording contract with Diamond Music, a Puerto Rican label, recording a few songs but didn’t achieve much success, perBillboard. In response, Guillermo bought Karol out of the contract so she could pursue other labels.

After leaving Diamond Music, Karol and Guillermo tried to contact other labels that would sign her — even flying to Miami for a meeting with Universal Music,Paper Magazinereported. According to the singer, the label didn’t sign her because they weren’t sure if a woman could break into the reggaeton genre and brought up the idea of songwriting.

“My dad got super mad,” Karol toldGQin 2023. “He said, ‘I didn’t come here to offer you a songwriter. I came to tell you that my daughter is a singer and she’s going to be huge!’ ”

Despite the roadblock, Karol and her father didn’t back down. Instead, they traveled around Colombia performing at clubs, colleges and festivals, according toPaper. Karol and her father spent two years grinding for her career, but she eventually became discouraged.

When she decided to give up on music and go to New York City to study marketing in 2012, Guillermo didn’t approve and stopped talking to Karol for three months, she toldThe New York Times.

“He was like, ‘No, you can’t do that. You are throwing away seven years of our hard work. I know who you are. I know we can get it. It’s hard, but when we get it, it’s going to be bigger than the rest.’ ” she recalled to the outlet.

While in N.Y.C., Karol spotted a sign for a music business conference in Boston. After attending, she decided to give music another try — looking at it from a business mindset, according toBillboard.Karol and her father created a home studio where they wrote and recorded songs together before she was eventually signed to Universal in 2016.

Though Guillermo dedicated most of his career to being Karol’s manager, he is also a musician.

When Karol was a child, he’d sing in his own band on the weekends, bringing home instruments for her to play — including the guitar, violin and drums. As Karol’s career took off and Guillermo became her manager, he focused on her music rather than his own.

Over the years, he has posted videos of himself singing in social settingson his Instagram, but in 2019, he announcedon Instagramthat he began recording music to release officially — and dropped his first song, “Pa Fuera,” under the name Papá G that year.

In anInstagrampost announcing a music video release for “Pa Fuera,” Guillermo wrote in Spanish, “I think my wish has finally come true, after more than 25 years of not recording … it is never too late.”

As Karol walked up with her father to accept the award, she started tearing up and told the audience she was “super nervous.”

She thanked everyone who believed in her — her family and label — and congratulated the other women in the industry before turning her attention to her father.

“I want to thank this man who has been with me throughout my career, my dad,” Karol added.

Martha often shares how proud she is of her daughter, but Karol’s music makes her emotional, too.

In a 2023TikTok, Karol showed her mom listening to her new song, “S91,” before calling her dad into the room to witness how it moved her.

The song, Karol wrote in the caption, is a reference to Psalm 91 — a prayer that her mother would have Karol and her siblings recite every morning before school as words of protection.

“When she saw that something she taught me since I was little had been included in the song, [her] tears were immediate,” the singer penned in Spanish. “There is no nicer feeling for me than knowing that my family is proud of me and that my music can cause them reactions like this."

Eventually, though, she decided to change her outlook. “Then I took the stance of, ‘turn a deaf ear to foolish words,’ ” Martha said.
