Lauryn HillandRohan Marley’s son, YG Marley, is continuing the family legacy.

Hill and Rohan, the son of reggae starBob Marley, had an on-again, off-again relationship throughout the mid-90s and early 2010s. During that time, theywelcomed five childrentogether: sons Zion, Joshua — known as YG — and John and daughters Selah and Sara.

While the “Doo Wop (That Thing)” singer hasn’t share too many details about parenthood, Rohan has given rare remarks about their children, including their son YG.

During a March 2024 episode oftheDrink Champspodcast, Rohan opened up about his son’s upbringing in New Jersey, where his mom grew up. “He’s special. He grew up in Jersey, South Orange," Rohan said. “He grew up as an independent youth, still finding his way.”

When asked if YG, who came out with his debut single “Praise Jah In The Moonlight” in 2023, experienced higher pressure to succeed, Rohan said that wasn’t the case. “His mother paved the way, I did what I had to do, his grandfather’s legacy, he ain’t got no pressure,” he added.

In recent years, YG has made appearances with his parents separately, including an event with the Marley family in January 2024, ahead of the release of the movieBob Marley: One Love.The musician also performed with his mom atCoachellaand at the2024 BET Awards.

They were in a relationship for over 10 years

Hill and Rohan have historically been private about their on-again, off-again relationship over the years.

Shortly after Hill welcomed her son Micah in 2011, she clarified in a now-deleted statement that Rohan was not the father and hinted at their connection. “We have had long periods of separation over the years but our five children together remain a joy to both of us,” she wrote on X.

Rohan gave rare remarks about their relationship during a February 2013 interview withOpenmagazine, explaining, “I feel sad that I loved her so much and I faltered in expressing it to her somehow.”

“It was my fault that she did not understand how I felt, and it was sad that we did not work out in that relationship sense,” he added. “I was heartbroken for a long time.”

They have five children together

Hill and Rohan are parents to five children together. They welcomedZionin 1997, Selah in 1998, Joshua “YG” in 2001, John in 2003 and Sara in 2008.

Hill and Rohan have also had kids with others. Hill’s youngest child, Micah, was born in 2011, and the father’s identity hasn’t been revealed.

Rohan previously welcomed two children with his first wife, Geraldine Khawly: daughter Eden in 1994 and son Nico in 1995. He brieflymarried model Barbara Fialhoand they welcomed their daughter,Maria. He is also the father tohis son, Berhane-Sol, born in 2022, as well asson Aidenanddaughter Zoe.

Hill and Rohan have musical roots

YG’s mom and dad musically influenced him in different ways.

Hill is one of the most influential women in music and blazed a trail for women in rap. In the early ’90s, she formed the hip-hop triothe FugeeswithWyclef JeanandPras Michel, spawning hits including “Killing Me Softly With His Song” and “Ready or Not.” Simultaneously, she worked as an actress and appeared in the soap operaAs the World Turnsbefore starring inSister Act 2in 1993 alongsideWhoopi Goldberg.

After the Fugees disbanded in 1997, she made her debut as a soloist with her 1998 albumThe Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,which was rankedNo. 1 on Apple Music’s 100 best albums of all timelist in May 2024.

Though Rohan himself is an entrepreneur and former Canadian Football League player, his fatherwas the late Bob Marley. The Jamaican-born singer-songwriter,who died in 1981, was a pioneer of reggae and an icon of the genre. While he began his solo career in the early 1960s, Bob rose to prominence as a musician through his group Bob Marley and the Wailers with hits including “Could You Be Loved” and “Three Little Birds.”

They are grandparents

A new generation of the Hill-Marley family has started.

Zion was the first of his siblings to become a father. He welcomed two children with his girlfriend, Tania: son Zephaniah Nesta and daughter Azariah Genesis. The triosurprised Hill on stage during a concertin October 2022 after she performed the song “To Zion.”

YG also started a family of his own several years back. While the musician has shared little about his family on social media, he posted a rare photo of his son, Caleb, and his unnamed twins inan Instagram postfrom June 2023. In the picture, he held all three of his children on his lap alongside the caption, “Happy Father’s Day to Super Dad.”

Rohan gave a glimpse into his grandson’s life inan Instagram postfrom July 2024 to celebrate his birthday. The post featured a series of photos of Caleb over the years, both solo and posing with his family. In the caption, Rohan wrote, “Blessed Earth Strong Prince Caleb 🧬👑Son of Joshua (@ygmarley) … 4th generation up next …They call me Baba … 💚💛❤️.”

Rohan is also a grandfather through his daughter, Eden, whowelcomed three childrenwith her husband.

Rohan says Hill impacted YG’s music career

Through his work, YG has incorporated different members of his family, including his mother.

YG released his debut single, “Praise Jah in the Moonlight,” in December 2023. The song contains a sample of his grandfather’s song “Crisis” and features his mother as a co-songwriter, perBillboard. In February 2024,Billboardannounced that YG became the sixth member of the Marley family to chart on the Hot 100 for the single.

Rohan gave Hill her flowers as an artist and as an influential figure in their son’s career during a March 2024 episode of theDrink Champspodcast.

“I must say this, though. Commend Ms. Lauryn Hill,” he said. “Obviously, he’s my son, but she’s his mother, and you know what her craft is. I only know certain people like this and it’s one of the reasons why when I was young, I always made it my point to never interfere with Ms. Hill’s music. I take a backseat to her music because she’s super great.”

Rohan later added, “But now it’s so beautiful to see her create her art and teach Joshua the way, and bring Joshua on stage to open for the Fugees reunion and Lauryn Hill and the Fugees to give him a way and give him a spotlight and guide him and help to orchestrate his music.”

YG and Hill have performed together

Hill was a major source of support for her son YG as he kick-started his career in the music industry.

In April 2024,Hill and Jean joined YG on stage at Coachelladuring the music festival’s first weekend. After YG performed his own work, his mom treated fans to her solo songs “Ex Factor” and “Lost Ones” and later sang “Killing Me Softly with His Song” with Jean.

During a May 2024 episode ofThe Tonight Show, Hill alsomade an appearance alongside her sonto sing a soulful medley of her song “Ex-Factor” and her son’s singles “Praise Jah in the Moonlight” and “Survival.”

The mother-son duo alsobrought their act to the BET Awardsin June 2024, performing several of their singles before Jean joined them for a Fugees tune.
