At Least 3 Dead, 2 Injured and 1 Person Missing After Boat Sinks Off Staten Island

At least three people are dead and another is missing after a boat capsized and sank off New York’s Staten Island on Sunday, Feb. 23, according to authorities and reports from multiple outlets includingNBC News,Sky Newsand local stationKABC.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in astatementthat they first responded to a 911 call about a “vessel taking water” near Breezy Point in Queens around 12:04 p.m. local time on Sunday, Feb, 23.

“Coast Guard watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and deployed three rescue boats from Coast Guard Station New York and Station Sandy Hook and an MH-65 helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in its statement.

Five people were recovered at the scene, with four “unresponsive,” according to the statement.

CBS Newsreported that a fourth person has since died.

The U.S. Coast Guard said they were still looking for an additional person “in the water approximately five miles southeast of Breezy Point,” according to the statement.

The New York Police Department, New York City Fire Department and New Jersey State Police were assisting the Coast Guard in their search operation.

Cecilio Adamas' husband was identified as one of the victims: She told CBS News he went fishing with five friends.

“At 10 a.m. I called him. I said, ‘Is everything okay?’ He said, ‘Oh there’s a lot of wind,’ ” she recalled.

The cause of the sinking is unknown at this time and the investigation is ongoing, ABC News reported.

PEOPLE has reached out to the NYPD and Coast Guard for further comment but did not immediately hear back.
