Boy, 8, Dies After Statue Falls on Him at Luxury Arizona Resort, Authorities Say

A boy in Arizona died after a concrete statue fell on him at a luxury resort.

The Phoenix Fire Department responded to the injury call.

The boy was rushed to the local hospital in critical condition. Police said he died at the hospital the following day due to the injuries sustained during the incident.

“There are no signs of foul play at this time,” police said.

Arizona Biltmore said in a statement to PEOPLE that it is “deeply saddened to learn of the family’s loss and extend our heartfelt condolences.”

The statement continued, “We wish them peace and respect their right to privacy during this difficult time. Our commitment to providing a safe and secure environment for our guests is paramount and we continue to cooperate fully with all authorities investigating this incident.”

The fire department told NBC-affiliateKPNXthat one of the resort’s famous geometric “Sprite” statues fell on top of the child and caused a head injury. Phoenix fire captain Todd Keller added at the time that authorities were unsure what caused the statue to fall.

According to the outlet, the boy was eight years old.

In an interview withFox 10, Keller commended the fire department’s response to the incident.

“Firefighters did an absolutely fabulous job getting this kid in the ambulance and transported to the hospital really quickly,” he said.

Fox 10 reports that the towering statues are made of concrete and weigh hundreds of pounds.
