Connie Brittonis remembering what it was like to transition to being a new mom.

“He’s still so sweet, and every day I’m like, ‘Is today gonna be the day? Have I lost him to teenagerdom?’ But for now, he’s such a sweet boy and still loves a lot of kids' stuff, so I’m going to hold on to that for as long as I can,” the proud mom shares.

“He does [ask], but he’s not crazily asking for that,” Britton says. “He occasionally is like, ‘Mom, when can I get a phone?’ And I’m like, ‘Not yet.'”

Britton later spoke at the event about her time visiting the Rape Treatment Center, remarking how thoughtfully the facilities and programs have been designed and noting that the Center is a stark contract from what it used to be to report a rape.

“If you reported [a] rape to the police, you would be the suspect in that investigation,” Britton said of what it was like to report a rape in the past. “They could make you take a lie detector test, they could subject you to a psychiatric examination, and if your case was ever prosecuted, you the victim would be put on trial.”

“Because of these conditions, most victims remain silent,” Britton shared. “But in 1974, the Rape Treatment Center began to change that. For the first time, rape victims were not treated like liars and perpetrators. Instead, they had a place to come to be treated with dignity and respect.”

In May 2023, Britton spoke with PEOPLE about season 2 of the nature docuseriesMAMAS, which she narrated, and said there wasone animal she particularly resonatedwith because she’s a single mom.

“I actually really related to the African wild dogs,” the star told PEOPLE.

“I think because those mamas are so dependent on their pack to raise their young. As a single mom, I completely rely on my ‘pack’ or village to raise my son and really in every aspect of my life, much like these dogs do. Even food, ha! My pack is very into feeding our children and ourselves.”
