Damiano Davidis sitting on a couch over Zoom when his girlfriendDove Cameron’s name comes up in conversation. It’s about her skills as a singer/songwriter — namely, that she’s a talented one.
At that, the Italian star looks up and to his right, smiling at someone off-camera whose presence was previously unknown.
“Good job, babe!” he says with a grin, laughing and extending his arms up as he claps toward his girlfriend off-screen.
“I’m so in love,” he says. “We play each other’s music, and I would say that we are very lucky because she loves music and I love her music. I really vibe with it. So it’s very fun.”

Despite the fact that they’re fans of one another, don’t expect to hear the Måneskin frontman — who announced this week that his debut solo albumFunny Little Fearswill be released May 16 — to collaborate with the “Boyfriend” singer anytime soon.
“Maybe in a couple of years,” he explains. “Right now feels extremely cheesy.”
“I think we’re just extremely lucky. We’ve somehow navigated being apart for long stretches of time… We just really make it work,” Cameron told PEOPLE in a recent interview. “We are best friends, we are constantly connected. You want to be together all the time, so you just figure out a way to make that happen… It’s so beautiful to be in love.”

David is currently launching a new phase of his career outside of Måneskin, the rock band he’s fronted since 2016. In September, he released his debut solo single “Silverlines,” and the new album will come out in May. He’s also set to embark on a global tour later this year that will cover 34 dates across five continents.
He explained to PEOPLE that despite Måneskin’s success, which includes a Grammy nomination and a chart-topping hit, he’dstarted to feel burnoutas the disconnect between who he was offstage and his frontman persona grew.

“I got to a point where a couple of not-great things happened, and it made me understand how my personality was fragile and how much I was relying on external validation to feel safe about myself,” he explains. “When those things started to crumble, I started to really understand that I’m not enjoying this. So it was like, ‘Okay, it’s either I keep doing this and I become completely numb to my job, or I take a big step. I do the scary thing and I take everything on my shoulders and I try to do it.’ And thank God I did it because now I got back all that enthusiasm and fun and happiness.”
In a statement announcing his upcoming album, David said he’d long faced fears, such as heights, darkness, and himself, but was finally ready to try.
“Honestly sometimes I’m still scared, but I wrote myself a manual. Hope u find it helpful too. I called itFunny Little Fears,” he wrote.
