After nearly 30 years at the helm of Versace,Donatella Versacehas officially stepped down as the brand’s creative director to become its global ambassador, marking the end of one of fashion’s most defining eras.
Donatella, 69, took over Versace following the1997 murder of her brother,Gianni Versace, and has since been instrumental in shaping the label’s identity in the modern era. Her tenure saw the brand expand its global reach while staying true to its signature bold, glamorous and unapologetically sexy aesthetic.
The designer confirmed the news in anInstagrampost on Thursday, March 12, announcing that Dario Vitale would be taking over to become the brand’s chief creative officer as of April 1, 2025.
The post read, “Championing the next generation of designers has always been important to me. I am thrilled that Dario Vitale will be joining us, and excited to see Versace through new eyes. I want to thank my incredible design team and all the employees at Versace that I have had the privilege of working with for over three decades."
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to carry on my brother Gianni’s legacy,” the post continued. “He was the true genius, but I hope I have some of his spirit and tenacity.”

Donatella’s departure comes amid significant changes at Capri Holdings, which acquired Versace in 2018 for $2.1 billion and has recently been exploring strategic shifts, including a potential sale of the brand.
From iconic red carpet moments — likeJennifer Lopez’sunforgettable jungle-print dressat the 2000 Grammys — to reinvigorating the brand with star-studded campaigns and collaborations, Donatella’s influence has been undeniable. Over the past year, Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, and Sabrina Carpenter have all turned to her signature designs, cementing her status as a go-to for music’s biggest names.
