Speaking exclusively with PEOPLE, showrunners and executive producers Rich Appel and Alec Sulkin reveal how they approach holiday-themedFamily Guyepisodes after22 previous seasons on air.
“We always approach our holiday episodes the same way: we try desperately to think of an episode we haven’t done in 25 years, and if we land on one, we throw in a Christmas tree,” they joke.
The pair adds, “We’d like to think that, over the years, our holiday episodes have grown more sophisticated and clever, but then again, the holidays themselves haven’t changed all that much in thousands of years, so we’re not too hard on ourselves.”
As for whatFamily Guyfans can look forward to as the series nears its 24th season, the comedy duo tease, “We hope the upcoming season sees our widely populated town grow in ways that are true to our characters while also excavating new types of comedy. Absent that, we tell, like, a thousand jokes, and there’s got to be at least one in there people will think is funny.”
Family Guy’s holiday special streams on Hulu on Nov. 25.
