Speaking with PEOPLE exclusively about the project, G-Eazy says he drew inspiration from the “highs and lows” of love — and he refused to hold back.“If you’re going to talk about heartbreak, be brutal, and be real and be vulnerable. That goes a long way. But if you’re going to talk about the highs of love, you got to go all the way there, too, and have fun,” G-Eazy, 35, says of his non-negotiables for the album.In order togo there, the “Tumblr Girls” rapper did a lot of self-reflection — and he came to a new realization.“That was the lesson that [producer Rodaidh McDonald] taught me throughout the making of this album was, ‘G, you’re an emotional person. I can tell you feel a lot. If you don’t love something, then it can’t hurt you. But, even though that comes with fear, it also comes with a sensation that’s very powerful. So, the vulnerability is a part of it. But it’s a beautiful part. It’s just the ride of life,” the “I Mean It” artist says.After many sessions in his studio in New York,Heliumwas born — and the name is a metaphor for love.“When you think of helium… it can have the power to lift you up, or take you higher. But it can also be fleeting, it can expire,” he explains. “But ultimately, love is one of the most beautiful feelings in life. It’s a powerful force. So I just dove in with the intention of leading with honesty. And experiencing all the feelings that come with love, like joy, like excitement, like happiness, but also heartbreak.“After writing an album with honesty and vulnerability, G-Eazy has also found a new sense of purpose.“I’m back in love with my craft, my music, being able to perform and be on the road. [I’m] in love with the period of my life I’m in,” he says.The 12-track album — which sees the rapper return to his roots — will include previously released singles “Nada” and Vampires.“In January, the rapper announced dates for his upcoming 26-date Helium Tour, which is set to commence on April 4 in New Haven, Conn. before wrapping up in Cleveland, Ohio in May.
