Groom's Mom Chose Her Son's Destination Wedding Date and Booked Flights Without Consulting Him or the Bride

A bride is questioning whether her mother-in-law was acting out of bounds after booking flights for her side of the family at the start of December — prompting her and her fiancé to set a wedding date then.The bride shared in aposton Reddit’s “Wedding” forum that she and her fiancé had been discussing wedding dates over the summer when he had mentioned that he would like “to get married before the holidays.”“I knew this did not give us a lot of time.. but we weren’t planning a large wedding,” she explained. “I told myself, ‘this is probably unrealistic, but I’m going to do my best to make this happen. If during the planning process we decide to push it back 6-8 months, that’s absolutely fine.’”The bride said they started the process of looking for venues, but they had “no idea” what they were doing and were having difficulties planning since their families were “long distance.” She said she and her fiancé eventually decided in mid-September to “shoot for the spring” as they were feeling overwhelmed with wedding planning.However, things changed three weeks later when her fiancé got a text from his mom that she “bought the whole family plane tickets for the first weekend in December.” She said she lost her “cool” after that as she had only found a wedding dress and “spoken with an officiant” at that point.At her insistence to “undo whatever she did,” her fiancé got on the phone with his mother and they talked for an hour, the bride said. I could make this stressful for my fiancé and dig my heels in and make them change the flights or… I can roll with it,” the bride said.“I’m not saying I made the right choice… but I rolled with it,” she added, noting that she and her fiancé were able to put together a wedding within 12 weeks.She said they managed to plan a small wedding with 20 guests and while wedding planning “was a lot,” they “made it happen.” She also noted that her mother-in-law “did not contribute financially.”“We made it happen and it was beautiful…. but I still feel this was weird,” the bride said of her mother-in-law’s behavior. “I loved my wedding day & I have an amazing husband… but this is strange behavior, right?”“I’m trying to be very mindful of my boundaries moving forward,” she added.Several people agreed that the bride’s mother-in-law crossed boundaries and that she should tread carefully while moving forward. One person warned, “Be cautious in involving MIL in any discussions or plans moving forward.”Another said her mother-in-law’s behavior was “weird, inappropriate and overstepped so many reasonable boundaries.
