Husband Stops Paying Wife’s Ivy League Student Loans After She Insults His Sister

A man is seeking advice from theReddit communityafter deciding to stop paying off his wife’s student loans following an insulting comment she made about his sister’s education.

The 36-year-old man owns a successful plumbing company and explained his wife, Anne, is an Ivy League graduate with a philosophy degree. Despite her prestigious education, Anne works as a receptionist at a law office earning about $40,000 per year.

“Anne has been enjoying virtually her entire salary as leisure money,” he shares, noting that he has been covering her student loan payments. However, the man immediately stopped her loan payments after she made a comment about his sister, Jennifer.

The incident occurred during a dinner with Jennifer, who had attended a different Ivy League school but dropped out due to mental health issues during her second year.

When Jennifer brought up her college experience, Anne reportedly said, “Oh you mean the backup school that you never graduated from?”

“This sparked a short argument between the two, but Jennifer decided to be the bigger person and walk away," the man writes. “It was incredibly awkward, but Anne seemed very satisfied with herself.”

However, this didn’t sit well with Anne. “Anne threw what could be best described as a tantrum, about how they’re too expensive, about how she doesn’t get paid that much, and about how I’m imperiling her financial well-being,” the man recalls.

The poster adds that this isn’t the first time Anne has been disrespectful toward Jennifer. “Now, for some reason beyond my understanding, Anne loves talking down to Jennifer,” he writes, adding, “This is particularly odd to me because I didn’t even go to college, and yet she chose to marry me.”

The situation has since created significant tension in their marriage. “For the last two weeks, Anne has been absolutely insufferable about this,” he shares. “She won’t even talk to me about anything else.” Because of this, the man is wondering if he should’ve reacted the way he did.

Many Reddit users have sided with the poster, claiming if Anne went to an Ivy League school then she’ll be able to find her way. “Your wife’s student loans are not your responsibility,” writes one user. Another adds, “She needs to reevaluate what she told Jennifer and apologize to her.”
