On Monday, Dec. 9, the eve of the release of his comedy specialJamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…the actor-musician-comedian, 56, posted a video to his Instagram account with what he called a “personal thank you” to fans and supporters.
“Just want to jump on and say thank you to everybody that prayed,” Foxx wrote in a caption. “It’s a blessing to be in the position that I’m in to be able to tell you my story in my way… I hope the jokes make you laugh and I hope the story inspires you.”
He concluded the caption, “It’s been a hell of a journey.”
What Had Happened Was…chronicles Foxx’smedical emergencythat began on April 11, 2023 and the complications that followed. The Oscar winnerconfirmed that he suffered a strokethat almost killed him while on the Atlanta set of his Netflix movieBack in Action.

As a result of a “brain bleed that led to a stroke,” he said onstage, “I went out. I don’t remember 20 days.” He also detailed hisdaughter Anelise’s guitar playingat his hospital bedside, which he said calmed his vital signs and helped him heal.

Reminding fans the special is available to stream on Netflix as of Dec. 10, Foxx said, “Get your popcorn! Let’s go on this ride, let’s listen to this story, let’s laugh, cry if you need to, cuz I know I have. But my tears now are tears of joy cuz I ain’t think I was gonna be able to do this.”
Reacting to hisGolden Globenomination for best performance in a stand-up comedy on television from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced Dec. 9, he added, “And the Golden Globes, thank you for that!”
Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was…is now streaming on Netflix. Foxx, who turns 57 on Dec. 13, will follow upCameron DiazactionBack in Action(on Netflix Jan. 17, 2025) with co-writing and directing the comedyAll-Star Weekend, which costars Jeremy Piven, Robert Downey Jr., Eva Longoria and more.
