Jimmy Fallonmay have gotten into hot water withSaturday Night LivecreatorLorne Michaelsfor his 2001 “Love-ahs” sketch, but more than 24 years later it’s been chosen to represent the iconic series’ 27th season in the run-up toSNL’s 50th anniversary.
The sketch, which originally aired live on Oct. 13, 2001, found Fallon’s character Dave sharing a hotel hot tub withWill FerrellandRachel Dratch’s recurring characters Virginia and Roger Clarvin, a.k.a. “The Love-ahs,” and guest hostDrew Barrymore. The characters’ awkward and absurd interactions were so funny, none of the four actors could help cracking up.
In a 2019 interview with Will Ferrell onThe Tonight Showthat recently resurfaced asSNLturns 50, Fallon recalled laughing uncontrollably during the sketch.
“I got in so much trouble,” Fallon said. “I mean, Lorne didn’t like it, the writers didn’t like it.”
What a difference more than two decades makes! AsNBCnotes, theSNLteam has been choosing one sketch from each season “to reflect the show’s rich legacy across five decades,” and Fallon’s hot tub dip with Ferrell, Dratch and Barrymore made the cut.
“I think it started with just me,” Fallon explained in 2019. “I always go to a different hotel, and I would end up in a hot tub, like, kind of enjoying that there’s no one in the hot tub, this is fun. And then two of the creepiest humans came and got in the hot tub with me.”
This, of course, was the recurring gag with Ferrell and Dratch’s over-amorous Clarvins. The characters had previously appeared in two similar sketches with guest hostsKatie HolmesandChristopher WalkenduringSNL’s 26th season.

“Right before I said my line, you’d give me a little, like, squeeze on the kneecap,” Fallon recalled.
“Which, I’m just in character,” Ferrell defended himself. “It added to the hijinks.”
“I loved trying to get you there,” Ferrell added.
