Character actor John Capodice — who has appeared in over 100 films and television series — died on Dec. 30 at age 83.
PEOPLE has reached out to Capodice’s rep for comment.
Capodice was born in Chicago in 1941. From 1964-1966, he served in the U.S. Army, during which time he fought in the Korean War.
In the 1970s, he began his career as an actor, where he’s best known for his role as Carmine Cerullo inGeneral Hospital.He also had memorable turns inSeinfeldandAce Ventura: Pet Detective.
Perhis IMDb page, his first on-screen credits came in 1978 when he appeared in the filmRush Itand starred in six episodes ofRyan’s Hopeas Lloyd Lord. From there, he went on to become a familiar face on television with guest appearances on classic shows includingBoy Meets World,Ellen,Will & Grace,Law & Order,Knot’s Landing,Another World,Murphy Brown,Mad About You,The West Wing,MonkandMurder, She Wrote.

Capodice also had a career in film. In addition to his role as a police officer who teasedJim Carrey’s title character inAce Ventura: Pet Detective, he also had small roles inIndependence Day,Enemy of the StateandGremlins 2: The New Batch.
A celebration of Capodice’s life will be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart RC Church in Sparkill, New York, per the funeral home.
