In apress releasedated Jan. 9, the Menomonee Falls, Wis.-based retailer said that “all associates have been informed [of the closures] and offered a competitive severance package or the ability to apply to other open roles at Kohl’s.” The company, which has more than 1,150 locations, also thanked its associates for their work.
“While Kohl’s continues to believe in the health and strength of its profitable store base, these specific locations were underperforming stores,” the release said.
In a statement, Kohl’s CEO Tom Kingsbury added, “We always take these decisions very seriously. As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

In addition to the 27 store closures, Kohl’s also said it plans to close its San Bernardino, Calif., e-commerce fulfillment center in May 2025 when the lease on that facility expires. According to the release, the company in recent years has expanded its ability to fulfill customer orders directly from store locations.
