Meanwhile, Martha, a florist, lives with her kids and her second husband Al. The family is struggling financially, and with Al constantly gone on business, Martha feels more alone than ever.
Throughout the course of the novel, Martha, Ash and Nina become intertwined in a “shocking collision course," per the book’s synopsis, as they come to see that Nick and Al may be harboring dark truths about who they really are.

“I just felt like there was something going on with him,” Jewell said at the time. “I don’t know why I thought this. I literally saw him for all of 10 seconds. I thought afterward, ‘I’m so creepy and weird, aren’t I? That I see men through windows and start obsessing about them!'”
The author also discussed her writing style, and how it isn’t difficult for her to separate the darker subject matter she includes in her novels from her own life.“Some writers are less compartmentalized than I am,” Jewell said. “But most thriller writers I know are very good at [knowing] that’s the place you go when you’re working. When you’re actually writing, you’re just writing words on a screen. It doesn’t feel dark when you’re doing it.”
