Mark Hamill and Wife Marilou Celebrate 46th Wedding Anniversary: 'She Cleaned My Teeth and the Rest Is History'

On Tuesday, Dec. 17, the couple celebrated 46 years of marriage, with theStar Warsveteran sharing a sweet tribute on social media to honor the occasion.

“On This Day in 1978: I married my dental hygienist, Marilou York,” the actor wrote in his caption, adding of Marilou, 69, “She cleaned my teeth & the rest … is history.”

“#HappyAnniversary2TheLoveOfMyLife. ❤️ 🎆 🙏,” he concluded.

The Hamills tied the knot at their home in Malibu, California, after meeting in the mid ’70s at a dental office Marilou worked in, just before Mark skyrocketed to fame withStar Wars.

“She came into the waiting room in jeans, white coat, breasts like melons, looking like a Vargas painting. I said, ‘They let you dress like that at work?’ She said, ‘Yeah. Next,’ " Mark quipped during a1981 interview with PEOPLE.

On their first date, he added, “I took her toAnnie Hallto see if she had a sense of humor. I dropped women if they didn’t.”

Soon after, they saw an earlyStar Warsscreening. “There was this one close-up of a minor character, curling his lips back from his teeth. She leaned over to me and whispered, ‘Bad caps,’ " Mark told PEOPLE at the time.

After tying the knot, Mark and Marilou went on to welcomethree children: sons Nathan, 45, and Griffin, 41, plus daughter Chelsea, 36.

Back in February, the actor celebrated his wife on her birthday,writing on Instagram, “Marilou, you are my forever dream & are younger in spirit today than when I first met you.”

“May you have the happiest of birthdays,” he added.

On their45th wedding anniversaryin December 2023, Mark wrote that he is “eternally grateful” that Marilou said “I do,” calling her the “Love Of My Life.”
