Max Is Finally Dethroned as the Most Popular Dog Name After Years at the Top

Max is no longer the top dog.

On Oct. 30, theAmerican Kennel Club(AKC), a nonprofit organization and the world’s largest purebred dog registry,shared a releasewith its most popular dog names for 2024.

For 2022 and 2023, the top male dog was Max, but now, the popular name’s reign as number one is over. According to the AKC’s findings, Milo is now the most common name among male dogs, jumping fromfifth place in 2023. Max fell one spot to number two for the AKC’s 2024 list.

Max’s domination of naming charts started before 2022.Rover.com, whichalso compiles an annual list of the most popular pet names, has the name listed as one of the most popular male dog names from 2013-2023.

“Dogs are an extraordinary and important part of our lives, and choosing a pet’s name is a fun part of the process,” AKC executive secretary Gina DiNardo said in a statement about why AKC compiles the top names lists. “People put a great deal of thought into naming their dogs and often spend hours trying to pick the perfect name to fit their new pet.”
