Colin Firthis a prolific actor, but his greatest role is being a father to his children: Will, Luca and Matteo.

Colin became a dad for the first time when he welcomed his son Will with his then-girlfriendMeg Tillyin 1990. A few years later, theBridget Jonesstar married Italian activistLivia Giuggioli, who later gave birth to their sons Luca, in 2001, and Matteo, in 2003. (The pair announced they split in 2019.)

Despite starring in blockbuster films likePride and Prejudice, his kids see him as a normal person. “My children would tell you that I’m not at all cool or suave,” he toldThe Mirrorin January 2015. “So my only chance to really become like that is when I’m making a film.”

Will was born in 1990

Colin and Tilly meton the set of the 1989 period dramaValmont. While working together, the actors began dating and welcomed their only child — son William Joseph Firth — on Sept. 20, 1990.

Afterward, he mostly lived with his mom, but his dad remained an important part of his life. Colin stayed active in Will’s life, according to Tilly.

“He’s been a good father to Will, his son, but he’s also stayed very present in my other two children’s lives, Emily and David. He’s showed up for graduations, births of babies,” Tilly told PEOPLE in June 2017. “He’s a sweetheart.”

Luca and Matteo were born two years apart

Colin married Livia in 1997 after they crossed paths while filming the BBC’s television series Nostromo the year before. They welcomed their older son, Luca, in March 2001 and their younger son, Matteo, in July 2003.

The two boys were raised between England and Italy, and Colin spent so much time in the latter country that he learned to speak the language fluently. In 2017, he earnedhis dual British-Italian citizenshipand spoke about what it meant for him.

“I was married there and had two children born in Rome,” Colin said in a statement. “Anyone will tell you when you marry an Italian you don’t just marry one person; you marry a family and perhaps an entire country — I have a passionate love of Italy and joining my wife and kids in being dual citizens will be a huge privilege.”

Will grew up on movie sets

When Will was young, he spent time on set with his mom.

“I would alwaystake my children with mewhen I went on movies,” Tilly told PEOPLE in June 2017. “That worked really well for a few years."

Tilly then opted to leave her career to focus on being a more present mother to Will and his siblings. (She welcomed her older kids, Emily and David, with her first husband, producer Tim Zinneman.)

“I couldn’t be gone six to nine months from my children’s lives,” she explained. “I had a challenging childhood, so I didn’t feel like I could trust somebody else to raise them. My children didn’t ask to be born. I had a responsibility to be there.”

Will became an actor like Colin

Will quickly followed in his parents’ footsteps and dipped his toe into show business for the first time when he was 12. He made a brief appearance as a boy on a tram in the 2002Spider-Manfilm.

Will toldThe Evening Standardin 2015 that his dad was “apprehensive” about him getting into acting.

“It’s a tough career. It can be emotionally draining, and he was worried for me,” he explained. “He wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into, but he’s supported me all the way.”

Luca is a folk singer-songwriter

Colin’s middle child is passionate about music. Luca is a folk artist who debutedhis first song“Wings” in 2021 and he has released other samples of his work over the years.

Most recently,Luca celebratedthe tune getting 1 million streamson Spotifyand “promised” new music is in the works.

Apart from sharing updates about his music gigs on hisown page, his mom, Livia, enjoys spotlighting his music on social media.

Matteo is a drummer

Colin’s youngest, Matteo, is a performer like his brother. He plays the drums and his band,Strange Child, released their first song, “Hours and Hours,” in 2022. That same year, they were part of the lineup at theIsle of Wight festival.

Matteo has also played drums for Luca during live performances. “The first time Luca and Matteo played together and my heart exploded,”Livia captioneda video of them together in 2023.

Luca and Matteo spend time working on their parents’ farm

The same month, sheshowedLuca working on some stuffed olives in the kitchen.

“When Luca and Nico (and Matteo not photographed here as he was still in the fields) are not working at the farm @quintosapore they experiment in the kitchen,”Livia wrote. “Here their pickles with the products from the farm - if the recipe is successful, you will find them soon for sale.”

Will is married to actress Amelie Edwards

Will wed fellow actor Amelie Edwards, who also works as a writer and producer, in August 2019.

“5 years married to this one!” Edwards wrote onInstagramin 2024. “How has that happened???? I genuinely think I’ve lost all gauge on time!”

The couple live together in London.

Livia is committed to avoiding waste — especially in the fashion department — and it seems she’s inspired her sons to do the same.

In 2023, she pointed out Luca’s well-loved clothing in abirthday post. “A vintage jacket, a gigantic zucchini, and a joke about Starsky and Hutch 😂🤣,” she wrote. “22 today @fucalirth proud of the man, son, brother, friend, boyfriend, grandson, uncle, musician, cook and all that you are ❤️ happy birthday.”

He also still uses a familiar piece of clothing from one of his dad’s films.

“[Luca has] been skiing for years using Colin’s jacket fromBridget Jones 2from 2004,” Livia shared onInstagram. “Which is way beyond #30wears and the best and fun example of #sustainablefashion.”
