Donald Trumpis the projected winner of North Carolina’s 16 electoral college votes, according to The Associated Press, defeatingKamala Harrisin a state that Democrats have long been eyeing.
North Carolina is a historically Republican state, only voting for one Democratic presidential candidate since 1980:Barack Obamain 2008.
Trump now has a total of 230 electoral votes, leading Harris, who has 179votes. The Electoral College consists of 538 members, and a candidate must secure270 votesto win the presidency.

In late August, theCook Political Reportmoved North Carolina from “lean Republican” to a “toss up,” writing that the state “looked more competitive than ever” after Harris entered the presidential race.
Poll projections throughout North Carolina started to vary in the months leading up to Election Day and the race was expected to be close.

The state’s voting infrastructure was scrambled in late September after Hurricane Helene brought destruction to western parts of the state — destroying polling sites, washing away absentee ballots and interrupting mail service.
Despite obstacles from the storm, voters set a statewide record for the first day of voting, withmore than 350,000 ballots cast, according to the North Carolina State Board of Elections.
Trump falsely accused Harris, the White House and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of deliberately withholding aid from Republican areas and diverting funds to help immigrants illegally living in the United States.
