On Thursday, Jan. 23, the Humane Fort Wayne animal shelter in Indiana announced onFacebookandInstagramthat a “resilient” black cat had been left in the cold outside the shelter’s old location.
As Humane Fort Wayne noted on social media, the cat — now named Mr. Satchel — was abandoned in winter weather inside a backpack outside the shelter’s former location. The temperature in Fort Wayne, Indiana, iscurrently around 20 degrees.
Mr. Sathcel sat outside Humane Fort Wayne’s old shelter location, stuck in the backpack, for 24 hours before a shelter staff member discovered the cat “cold, terrified, alone and covered in his own waste” while visiting the location.
“But now, he was in safe hands. Our medical team attended to him right away and was relieved he didn’t show any signs of frostbite despite the frigid temperatures,” Humane Fort Wayne wrote on social media.

According to the shelter, the cat requires “a whole lot of lovin'” to eat, which he’s been doing more of since settling in. Mr. Satchel “needs to be in a loving home as soon as possible,” Humane Fort Wayne wrote.
The shelter wrote, “His resilient spirit and sheer love for humans truly bring us to tears after all that he has been through 🥹”
“This loving boy needs a home right away! If you’re ready to open your heart to a kitty with an unbreakable spirit, come meet him today. We know he’ll fill your life with endless love — and head boops. ❤️🐱”

In a comment underneath the images on both social media platforms, the shelter reminded locals that it is “unlawful to abandon animals anywhere, even at animal shelters, without having spoken with a staff member first.”
As of Friday afternoon, Mr. Satchel had not yet found his forever home. He is listed on the shelter’sofficial website. According to the site, the cat is a domestic shorthair/mix and has been neutered.
