Rob Lowe Reacts to Demi Moore's Recent Awards Recognition: 'Our Generation Is Getting Their Moment in the Sun' (Exclusive)

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor, 60, celebrates Moore, 62, as she has received praise for herThe Substancerole amid the current awards cycle. The actress has so far scored aGolden Globes winand aCritics Choice Awards win, plus nominations at theAcademy Awards, theBAFTA Awards, theScreen Actors Guild Awardsand the Independent Spirit Awards.

“It’s really fun,” Lowe, who has partnered withUltimate Pet Nutrition, says of Moore’s accolades from the film industry. “She really deserves it. She’s one of the rare things: she’s both a great actress and a true star.”

“I mean, last year, I got to go through this with my eighth-grade high school buddy,Robert Downey Jr., and now this year I’m getting to cheer on Demi,” he continues, referring to the praise theIron Manstar got for his role inOppenheimer.

Lowe and Moore first appeared onscreen together in the 1985 classicSt. Elmo’s Fire, in which Moore played party girl Jules and Lowe portrayed the charismatic but troubled Billy.

They reunited a year later for the 1986 rom-comAbout Last Night,which starred Moore and Lowe as Debbie Sullivan and Danny Martin, two 20-somethings in Chicago who fall in love and must navigate the ups and downs of their first real relationship.

Their time together in the mid-1980s even sparked a real-life romance between the two. While appearing onLive! with Kelly and Markin October 2024, Lowe revealed that he and Moore dated briefly.

“I mean, Demi and I briefly — I’m not telling tales out of school —we briefly had a thing,” he said, adding, “Look, anytime you put young 20-something men and women together, hookups are inevitable."
