Scream 7: All About the Latest Installment of the Hit Horror Franchise

The latestScreaminstallment has had some major shakeups.

Though the seventh film is still in the works, the franchise has hit a bump in the road as it has been reported that several cast members will no longer return for the sequel.

Recently, there was another major update in the upcoming movie as Neve Campbell announced her anticipated return and confirmed that Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996Screammovie, will return to direct.

Which cast members are not returning forScream 7?

“Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech,” Spyglass, the studio behindScream 7, said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Barrera previously starred as Sam Carpenter in both 2022’sScreamandScream VI, where her character was introduced asScreamvillain Billy Loomis’ (Skeet Ulrich) daughter. Her character was set to follow in the footsteps of Neve Campbell’s Sidney Prescott as the new franchise lead.

Shortly after Barrera’s exit was announced,DeadlineandThe Hollywood Reporterreported thatJenna Ortega, who has starred in the last two Scream films as Barrera’s onscreen sister Tara Carpenter, isno longer expected to reprise her roleforScream 7.

Deadline reported that Ortega’s departure from the film was due to her busy filming schedule on the second season of Netflix’sWednesdayand wrapping on filming forBeetlejuice 2.

After her character survived inScream 6,it was also rumored that Courteney Cox would return as Gale Weathers. In September 2024, she toldVarietyshe hadn’t “officially signed on” yet, but there’s still a chance she may appear. “They’re rewriting all the time. It’s not like I don’t know what’s going on,” she said.

In March 2024, Campbell announcedshe would be reprising her role as Sidney Prescottfor the new movie. Campbell first played the character in the original 1996 filmScreamand returned for each of the sequels except in the 2023 sixth entry.

Joel McHalewill also be joining the cast as Sidney’s husband Mark Evans,Deadlinereported in January 2025.

More updates came later that month whenMark Consuelosconfirmed that he would also be inScream 7during an episode ofLive with Kelly and Mark, saying he “had the most amazing time” filming the movie in Atlanta.

Days later,Matthew Lillardhinted that he would be reprising his role as co-Ghostface Stu Macher in the new movie. He shared the news with anInstagram postthat featured a video of his hand as he wrote one of his quotes from the original movie: “My mom and dad aregonna be soo mad at me!!”

Celeste O’Connor, McKenna Grace, Asa Germann and Sam Rechner have also joined the cast, along withIsabel Mayin the role of Campbell’s onscreen daughter.

Who is directingScream 7?

Christopher Landon, whose previous films includeParanormal Activity: The Marked Ones(2014),Freaky(2020) andHappy Death Day(2017), was slated to direct the upcoming movie, however, in December he shared in apost on X(formerly Twitter) thathe is no longer involved in the project.

“I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exitedScream 7weeks ago. This will disappoint some and delight others,” Landon wrote in his post. “It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.”

“I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope [originalScreamdirector Wes Craven’s] legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world,” the filmmaker shared. “What he and [producer/screenwriter Kevin Williamson] created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”

When Campbell announced her return, she also confirmed that Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original 1996Screammovie, will direct the new movie as she shared a photo of the script.

In October 2024, Neve Campbell and director Kevin Williamson announced thatScream 7will hit theaters on Feb. 27, 2026, in a jointInstagrampost.

Alongside a photo of a knife stabbing a calendar that shows the movie’s release date (with plenty of blood splatters for good measure), Campbell wrote, “It’s gonna be a killer 2026. #Scream7.”
