Renowned designer Oscar de la Renta created the custom lace ballgown that Amal wore down the aisle. In aVogueprofile of her final fitting, Amal said choosing the designer was an easy decision.
“George and I wanted a wedding that was romantic and elegant, and I can’t imagine anyone more able than Oscar to capture this mood in a dress,” she said. “Meeting him made the design process all the more magical, as he is so warm and such a gentleman.”
Amal and de la Renta worked closely to create a design that was true to her style.
“Any girl from any walk of life dreams of that special dress, and I try to make that dream a reality for her,” de la Renta toldVogue. “Amal and I looked at a lot of evening dresses and wedding dresses together, and we discussed what she liked. That gave me the idea of what she wanted.”
The final design was a cream-colored ballgown covered in 14 yards of Chantilly lace appliqués and hand-embroidered with pearls and diamanté stones. It featured an off-the-shoulder neckline with a raw edge and a full train for a traditional bridal look.
According toVogue, Amal inquired about the unfinished neckline with de la Renta’s head tailor, Raffaele Ilardo, during her final fitting. He told her it was meant to be “un peu impur,” which translates to “a little impure.”

Amal completed her bridal look with a few classic accessories. She paired her off-the-shoulder gown with a cathedral-length veil that featured the same lace and beading as her dress.
The lace ballgown wasn’t the only Oscar de la Renta dress that Amal wore for her wedding celebration. For the reception, she changed into a silver mini dress complete with a fringe hem and pearl beading. According toVogue, the second dress was pulled from de la Renta’s Fall 2014 collection, but the hem was shortened from ankle to mid-thigh to better serve a night of dancing.
Amal accessorized the silver mini with hand-embroidered beaded silver pumps that were from de la Renta’s Spring 2015 collection.

In October 2017, Amal’s gown was put on display at Houston’s Museum of Fine Arts as part ofThe Glamour and Romance of Oscar de la Rentaexhibition. Her wedding dress was the last one that de la Renta designed before his death in October 2014.
During an interview withWWD, the lateAndré Leon Talley, who curated the exhibit, said that Amal declined to provide her gown for an earlier exhibit because it was too soon after her wedding, but ultimately loaned it for the 2017 display.
