Michigan authorities are hailing a sheriff’s deputy as a hero for saving the life of a 63-year-old man in what looked like a scene from a Hollywood action movie.
When their patrol vehicle approached the truck, which was traveling southbound about 5 miles per hour, the deputies found the truck’s driver appearing to be “in a daze,” the sheriff’s office said. With their patrol car’s lights and sirens activated, the deputies were unable to ask the man to stop the truck.
The truck’s driver then rolled down his windows and briefly hit the brakes, authorities added. As both vehicles were next to each other and still moving, Deputy Nicole Miron, who was on the passenger side, exited from her window and climbed into the truck, the video showed.
First responders arrived at the scene and treated the driver, who was later taken to a hospital, the sheriff’s office added.
Recalling later what happened, Miron toldGood Morning Americathat she wanted to get the driver “stopped” before they entered the busy intersection.
“I didn’t know if he could hit somebody else, or they wouldn’t see him and hit him,” she added. “And it probably could have been a lot worse.”
Deputy Anthony Gross, who was driving the patrol car, toldGMAthat he was “worried about trying to keep [the driver] safe and us safe, and with the heavy traffic in the area, and trying to stay as close as I could so that we could handle [the] situation.”
In the department’s Facebook post, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham praised Miron. “I commend Deputy Miron for putting herself in harm’s way to help a citizen in need and protect other drivers on the roadway,” Wickersham said. “Due to her quick thinking and selfless actions, she safely ended what could have been a tragic situation.”
