“I think we all thought it was going to be really silly and funny,” he said. “And then when you’re standing in front of two families, joining two people in holy matrimony, there’s a seriousness of what you’re doing, creating a bond between two people. It’s one that I hold very dear.”
Modine reflected on his own marriage to Caridad Rivera, who he married in 1980. He’s grateful that he and his wife have fostered a lasting bond all these years later, saying “what a blessing that is.”
Modine plays Brown’s “Papa” — a.k.a. Dr. Martin Brenner — inStranger Things.Though Brenner isn’t much of a role model or parental figure to Brown’s character, Eleven, in real life, Modine hashelped guidehis costar, now 21, to navigate her sudden rise to fame.

“There’s ups and downs in a career. I’ve had conversations with Millie and the others,” he toldThe Timesin 2022. “And I try to help them to understand they are on a rollercoaster. And the higher you go in your career, the more that drop will feel really, really frightening.”
Since they both landed roles on the nostalgic Netflix sci-fi series in 2016, Brown and Modine have forged alasting friendship. “It is a friendship I will carry with me for the rest of my life,” Modine said, adding that Brown is “so focused, so determined, so intelligent.”
