It wasn’t easy forTate McRaeand The Kid LAROI to sing together live on stage for the first time.
In a newinterview with Jimmy Fallon onThe Tonight Show, McRae spoke about singing with LAROI for the first time when theyperformed a duet of his hit “Without You” during her Think Later World Tour stop at Madison Square Gardenin New York City in August 2024.
Now, they have an official duet, “I Know Love,” on McRae’s new albumSo Close to What.“It was a little nerve-wracking,” she said of making the song.
“I mean, the first time we ever sang in front of each other was actually at my MSG show last year,” added the Canadian pop star.
Before the performance, McRae said they would “fake sing in front of each other all the time” but never for real. “So, like, even when we were at our show last year, we were sitting in soundcheck like, ‘Are you going to sing first?'”
While recording “I Know Love,” McRae recalled experiencing “same kind of situation in the studio” and asking LAROI, “Can you, like, not listen?”
LAROI later adds, “We started off friends, how we end up here? / I don’t know, but I don’t see no problems / We started off friends, how you end up here next to me? (Honestly, this s— is crazy) / I said, ‘You my type,’ out in Mexico tonight / You said it was gon’ be quick, now we’re twelve months in.”

McRae recently spoke about making “I Know Love” during an album listening event with Spotify at the Living Room in Los Angeles on Feb. 18.
“It was a really funny process because me and Laroi have never really taken each other seriously,” she said at the time. “You know when you’re in a relationship, and you sing around each other, you don’t really sing. So, it’s a little stressful being in the studio, singing and writing in front of him, but it was a cool experience to watch him in his process.”
