Mark, a prominent banker and investor, was declared the overwhelming winner of the Liberal Party’s leadership election with nearly 86 percent of the vote on March 9, perThe New York Times. He will succeedJustin Trudeau, who has served as Canada’s prime minister since 2015 and announced his resignation in January 2025.
As the incoming prime minister, Mark is embarking on new territory as he’s never held an elected position and does not currently hold a seat in Parliament.
“Without your support, I wouldn’t be standing here,“he saidto his family during his acceptance speech. “Without your examples, I wouldn’t have a purpose. Without your love, I wouldn’t have the strength that I need for what lies ahead.”

The couple met while studying at the University of Oxford. They bonded over their love of ice hockey as Diana was a member of theOxford University Ice Hockey Cluband so was Mark.

Born in the U.K., Diana has a Master of Arts degree in philosophy, politics and economics, as well as a Master of Science degree in agricultural economics from Oxford. She also holds a master of arts in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania, per herLinkedIn.
Diana is an expert economist who specializes in developing nations. She previously served as the vice president of Canada 2020 — a think tank focused on issues concerning climate, energy, social mobility and inequality — before becoming the Institute for Public Policy Research’s director of strategy and engagement. Diana has since left that position, and her employment is unknown.
To date, Diana has authored two academic publications:Changing Public and Private Roles in Agricultural Service Provision(1998) andNatural Resource Management and Institutional Change(1998).

Mark and Diana wed in 1994 and went on to welcome four daughters: Cleo, Tess, Amelia and Sasha.
Cleo, who is a freshman at Harvard,introduced her dadbefore he delivered his victory speech on election night in March 2025. She described Mark as “focused and principled” as well as “funny and kind.”
“I want Canadians to understand what kind of a man he is. And who is better qualified to speak on his character than his daughter?” she said. “My father is, to his core, a man of commitment. He is unflinchingly dedicated to what matters. Canadians care about actions, and my father is a man of action.”
Cleo continued, “My dad invests in what matters. He expects nothing to come without hard work, and he is always ready to work hard. However hard things may seem, he shows up and never lets you down. He has and always will show up for you. He cares about this great country.”
Mark and Diana’s daughter also shared an anecdote from her childhood with the audience.
“Every year for our birthdays, he burned us CDs, and somehow they were good. Sometimes now when we don’t know what to get him, we make him a playlist,” Cleo said from the podium.

Diana stays mostly out of the spotlight, but she was present on election night when her husband was named the new Liberal Party leader.
The mom of four donned a chic, bright-red suit and sat in the front row alongside Cleo as Mark delivered his acceptance speech.
