Uzo Aduba and her husband, Robert Sweeting, keep their romance super low-key.

TheOrange Is the New Blackactressfirst announced her marriageto the filmmaker in 2021 — one year after they had secretly married in New York.

“For some of us, it can feel like we spend our whole lives waiting for our special someone. My heart, my love — I’m so happy my life started last year with you. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me,” she wrote onInstagramat the time.

In June 2023, Sweeting and Aduba attended theTony Awards, where theMiss Virginiastar announced her pregnancy. She gave birth to the couple’s first child,Adaiba Lee Nonyem, in November 2023.

Aduba told PEOPLE in September 2024 that from the beginning, Sweeting made her “feel safe.”

“I felt safe to be all of myself around him — not the best of myself, all of myself, my frailties, my vulnerabilities, my weak, ugly parts," she shared. “I felt safe enough to show him that. And when he saw it, he still loved me. I never, and still never, doubted that he loved me.”

He’s a filmmaker

He often givesglimpses of his work on social media, including behind-the-scenes looks on set. In addition to directing, he is also a photographer, recentlycapturing photos of R&B singer-songwriter, Joe.

He’s certified in scuba diving

In May 2023,Sweeting reflected on “learning to scuba diveand getting certified to dive to 60 ft.” on Instagram. “Was a big step for me, especially since I used to be afraid of the water,” he captioned the post at the time. “I conquered my childhood fear of swimming, but I also gained a new appreciation for the ocean. This is just the beginning of my journey towards a healthier lifestyle in 2023. 🤿🌊🐠.”

He’s super close with his mom

Sweeting often shares tributes to his momon social media.

For Mother’s Day in 2023, the filmmaker shared a handful of childhood photos with his mother, writing, “Happy Mother’s Day to an amazing woman. Thank you for always being there for me with your unwavering love, guidance, and support. You are the reason I am the person I am today. Your sacrifices, patience, and endless love have made me a better man. I am extremely grateful for you. Today, I celebrate you and all the amazing things you do as a mother. I love you.”

He ended the post with a handful of hashtags, including “MomGoals,” “MyMomMyHero” and “ThankYouMom.”

He and Aduba got married in 2020

In September 2023, Aduba shared photos from the traditional Nigerian celebration in honor of the couple’sthird wedding anniversary.

“This day meant so much to us,” she wrote on Instagram. “You have made my entire life better, more full. I am so thankful our souls found each other.”

While talking to PEOPLE in September 2024, she admitted that she was “really sad " at first that her wedding would be smaller than what she imagined since it took place early on in the pandemic, but that feeling didn’t last long.

“But the minute we started in my sister’s backyard, it was perfect. It was more than enough,” she said.

He and Aduba choose to keep their relationship personal

During an appearance onLive with Kelly and Ryanin November 2021, Aduba opened up aboutthe couple’s decision to keep their nuptials a secretat first. “We were just taking the year to ourselves to enjoy the time and have some quiet time together, and then we were having our anniversary come up,” she said, adding that they celebrated the anniversary in Tulum, Mexico.

They have only made a handful of public appearances together. In September 2021, they made their red carpet debut at the Emmy Awards before attending the Tony Awards together in June 2022.

Sweeting and Aduba welcomed their daughter,Adaiba Lee Nonyem, into the world in November 2023.

“My daughter. I’ve never been in love so quickly, so deeply in my entire life. My heart is full,” the actress wrote on Instagram when announcing the arrival of the couple’s first child. “Thank you, God. I have joy like a fountain. I have witnessed a miraculous thing.”

She continued: “Motherhood. I’ve joined the club. I hear the dues are high, but the membership is completely worth it.”
